One of the many things you will enjoy on a trip to Senegal is the delicious food! The cuisine has been influenced by France since Senegal was a colony of France, but Portugal and North Africa as well as ethnic groups like the Islamic Wolof also give Senegalese cooking its distinctive flavor.
As Senegal is on the Atlantic Ocean, fish is important but chicken, beef and lamb are used often in Senegal cooking but you won’t find much pork due to the Islamic influence. Vegetables include lentils, sweet potatoes, and black-eyed beans and you can also find peanuts and bananas in the country’s tasty dishes. The dishes are often stews served over rice or couscous.
