Travel Guides

Everyone likes to get away for the holidays. But if you are anything like me, the holiday shopping ordeal means that you are strapped financially. So how do you take that special winter vacation, when it seemed all you could do to just put Christmas presents under the tree? Fortunately, you do have some low-budget vacation options, if you just know where to look for them. Here are some tips for how to find cheap winter travel deals:

Group savings sites. Did you know that websites like Groupon and Living Social have departments specifically geared to bringing you the best travel deals around? I am sometimes shocked and amazed at the specials delivered to my inbox – so much so that I wish I could vacation year-round. To take advantage of these deals, simply visit the websites, sign up for your location and interests, and wait to receive your offers

Off season. So, you hate the snow and want to escape the winter blues in favor of something warmer, and perhaps even tropical? Fortunately, your winter season is some distant beach’s off season. That means you can get flights and accommodations at a fraction of the price. Search the Internet, or ask a travel agency, for great off season suggestions.

Timing is everything. When it comes to finding cheap flights, there are certain times during the winter season when flights can be booked the cheapest. For example, flights during the two weeks right at the mid-point of Thanksgiving and Christmas are the easiest to book, and the least expensive, because people are generally over traveling for Thanksgiving, and haven’t yet set out on their Christmas vacations. When airports are slow, you can be sure to find a deal, so monitor flight booking sites daily, and well in advance, in order to catch prices when they’re at their best.

Call directly. Rather than checking into a hotel’s website or calling the 800-number for customer service, call the hotels you are interested in staying at, using their local numbers. If it is slow season and you speak directly with a manager of the branch you want to stay at, chances are you can bargain for a discounted rate – just for asking.

As you can see, there are some very simple things you can do to find winter travel deals and make a real vacation for yourself, on a dime. The trick is to do your research, do your legwork, be flexible, and be open to options you might not have originally had in mind.
